Bob Barbour Surf Photographer

Bob was a masthead photographer for Surfing Magazine from 1975-1991, helping develop its reputation for photographic excellence alongside the other legends in surf photography. This well-traveled photographer is a Santa Cruz resident and his prolific work has been featured in numerous surfing books, calendars, and every major surf publication, including Surfer's Journal and Surfer.

Three decades of images include beautiful waves, classic Woodie cars, and stunning shots of big wave pioneer Margo Oberg and others, plus pros and Santa Cruz standouts like Adam Repogle, Darryl "Flea" Virostko, Richard Schmidt and Terry Simms.

Known best for helping "break" Mavericks publicly and capturing defining moments like the infamous 1994 Mavericks "WipeOut of the Decade" image of 16-year-old Jay Moriarity.

Bob Barbour In His Own Words:

"A native Californian, I grew up immersed in the surf culture of the '60s and have a deep appreciation of the soulful lifestyle that I've come to know. My passion for the ocean, surfing and nature quickly became my primary subject matter, as well as my inspiration. The sea and water sports brought me to Surfer and Surfing Magazines as a staff photographer for over 30 years. Traveling worldwide on editorial assignments has given me the opportunity to contribute extensively to books, magazines, advertising, calendars and numerous exhibits.

As my career progressed, my interest was drawing me "into" the water. I wanted to create unique and timeless images of the ocean, directly from the ocean, giving viewers a perspective that most would never have the opportunity to experience. These photographs are captured while I'm swimming or floating on a mat, oftentimes in extreme conditions. To protect the camera, I design and build my own custom water housings. I use Canon lenses and camera bodies exclusively, and Fuji Velvia is my film of choice.

I'm committed to creating a lasting piece of art for my clients to enjoy. I decided early on that I'd do my own framing in order to have total control from start to finish. The original transparencies are drum scanned, printed on Fuji Crystal Archival paper and mounted on acid-free foam-core. To complete the piece, I use acid-free mat board, UV glass and unique, interesting frames. Most recently, I've been designing my own select hardwood moldings. I offer custom framing as well, so the collectors have an opportunity to create a piece for their space, with their vision."
